New report consolidates finances of the Church of England

The Church of England has published a new overview of its finances for the 10 years from 2004-2013, drawing together information from over 12,000 parishes, 44 dioceses, 41 cathedrals and three National Church Institutions (NCIs) into one place.

Wife of Henry VIII wrote BCP prayer

A Canadian university professor has discovered that the prayer for the Monarch, contained in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and retained by many provinces, in one form or another, was written by Katherine Parr, the last wife of Henry VIII, and selected for use in the BCP by Queen Elizabeth I.

Church of England steps up fight against human trafficking

The C of E is setting up a network of champions to work alongside police forces and statutory and non-statutory agencies to support victims of human trafficking. Last year more than 2,300 people were identified as victims of trafficking in the UK from more than 96 different countries. That figure is set to rise following the coming into force of the new Modern Slavery Act which creates new offences and sets out a number of measures to protect victims.

Refugee movement is "largest crisis that Europe has had to face since World War II"

The refugee crisis in Europe is the “largest crisis that Europe has had to face since World War II,” the Church of England’s suffragan Bishop of Europe, the Rt Revd David Hamid, told ACNS this week. And the bishop warned that churches, governments and agencies need to prepare for a “medium- to long-term situation” that is “not going to go away quickly.”

Alas poor Shakespeare: skull controversy is much ado about nothing

A plea by an English vicar for permission to DNA-test a skull in a Worcestershire church to see if it belonged to the playwright William Shakespeare has been rejected by a Church of England judge who ruled that “no factual base whatsoever” had been put forward to “justify exhumation, removal or investigation.”
