What sort of a bishop cancels his inaugural service to be with a grieving family? Bishop Philip Freier, who missed his inaugural service in 1999 after becoming Bishop of Northern Territory, to offer comfort to one of his flock, was elected last night as the Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Melbourne.

The Right Reverend Dr Philip Freier has been elected by an overwhelming majority as the new Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne. Archbishop-Elect Freier, 51, who was elected by a two-thirds majority of Synod members at the special Election meeting 14-19 August, is currently the Bishop of the Northern Territory
