The Church Mission Society (CMS) and Mid-Africa Ministry (MAM) have confirmed that they intend to integrate, with the first stage of the process to be completed by January 2001. A statement agreed by the governing bodies of both agencies was released on 28th July 2000

"A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Lord Coggan of Canterbury and Sissinghurst, the 101st Archbishop of Canterbury was held in Winchester Cathedral on 30 June 2000. The Rt Revd Michael Turnbull, Bishop of Durham, preached the sermon and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd George Carey, read the final scripture sentences and gave the blessing.

The Roman Catholic church had been outlawed since the Reformation, but with the passing of legislation to allow catholic emancipation, Pope Pius IX established thirteen dioceses in England and Wales.
