A delegation up of bishops, an official welcome from a government minister, a group of journalists, and an 80-strong choir of Mothers’ Union members greeted the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby when he arrived in Lusaka on Tuesday for a meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council’s standing committee ahead of the start, on Friday, of ACC-16.

The World Council of Churches will convene a conference on the theme “Reconciliation Processes in Indigenous Contexts” in Trondheim, Norway, on 20-21 June. The conference, which will be hosted by the Sami Church Council (Church of Norway), will be held in connection with the WCC Central Committee meeting on 22-28 June, also in Trondheim.

Twenty-three people representing six provinces – Burundi, West Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, Tanzania and the (American) Episcopal Church – have come together for the Galatians 6:2 Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to create “the space where trust is developed” and build companionship despite differences in the Communion.

A Communion-wide season of intentional discipleship should not be created to address poor church attendance, or to counter the challenge faced by churches with high attendance and low commitment. Instead, it should be “a response to the biblical call to make disciples to honour and glorify God, as Christians live out their faith in everyday life,"a major new report published by the Anglican Communion says.

When members of the ACC meet in Lusaka next month they will discuss – in the context of intentional discipleship – issues ranging from gender justice, refugees and migration, the environment and reconciliation; and they will do so against a backdrop of prayer, Bible study and worship. Members of the Anglican Communion are being invited to join with them as they explore the Book of Ruth in a series of Bible studies.

“The key to eradicating most poverty on the planet, aside from programs that help, aside from economic development, which is all obvious, the key is to be found in women,” [Episcopal Church] Presiding Bishop Michael Curry said in a sermon this week preached in honour of the Episcopal and Anglican women gathered in New York City for the 60th annual United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
