We, Church Leaders in New Zealand, are gravely concerned at the terrible tragedy developing in Darfur, Western Sudan; a disaster that the United Nations has described as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Over 1.2 million people have been forced to flee their homes and are now internally displaced or refugees in neighbouring Chad.

The Most Revd Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has concluded his tour of the Church of the Province of Melanesia. The eight-day visit to the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu covered six of the eight Anglican dioceses in the archipelago.

The Most Revd Rowan Williams has been sworn in as a Companion of the Melanesian Brotherhood and has also urged the islanders to become a model for reconciliation. The Archbishop was speaking to more than 6,000 people at an ecumenical service that was also broadcast live to the rest of the islands.
