Lambeth Call on Reconciliation to be the focus of November Webinar

Posted on: October 13, 2025 4:02 PM

On the 19th and 20th of November, the Anglican Communion Office will host webinars exploring the Lambeth Call on Reconciliation, as the final part of a series exploring the Lambeth Calls, which originated at the 2022 Lambeth Conference.

The webinar will share experiences and reflections from Anglicans across the Communion involved in peace and reconciliation ministry and aims to inspire participants to consider what adopting the Lambeth Call on Reconciliation might mean for their individual setting. It will also include insight from the reconciliation organisation Difference, which works to equip people of faith to cross divides, navigate disagreement and pursue a just and flourishing world through an adaptable course from the Reconciling Leaders Network (RLN).

The Lambeth Calls are a series of written commitments created collaboratively from the bishops of the Lambeth Conference in 2022. The Lambeth Call to Reconciliation ‘reaffirms God’s reconciling mission, the ongoing process of bringing us back to God in and through Christ, as the Church’s ministry.’ Underscoring the fourth Anglican Mark of Mission, ‘To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation’, the Call recognises ‘that those in power have sometimes used talk of reconciliation to maintain systems of power and impede efforts towards justice and wholeness,’ and encourages ‘a Communion-wide focus on this ministry as it is embodied in our different contexts.’ (Lambeth Call to Reconciliation 3.2).

The webinar seeks to give a platform to hope in reconciliation and peace by drawing on resources available to people of faith and examples of action and advocacy already at work in the global communion.  Webinar contributors include:

  • The Most Revd Dr Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town and Primate of Southern Africa.
  • Agnes Lam, a youth leader in the Anglican Communion, serving on the Executive Committee of the Anglican Communion Youth Network (ACYN).
  • Larissa Minniecon, a respected, emerging Christian leader with experience working in Community Development and Indigenous Health in remote, rural and urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Alan Smith from the Church of England, Project Spire.
  • The Rt Revd Jorge Pina Cabral, Bishop of the Lusitanian Church (Extra Provincial to the Archbishop of Canterbury).

Speaking about the importance of reconciliation, the Rt Revd Dr Jo Wells, who will host the Lambeth Call webinar, said: ‘At the heart of our faith is the cross of Christ, which, as Paul explains, breaks down the dividing wall between people who are alienated from each other as well as from God. Our mandate is to make peace and live into the reality of the one new humanity (Ephesians 2) – or we’re missing out.’

Martha Jarvis, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations on behalf of the Anglican Communion, reflected: ‘'For followers of Jesus, reconciliation has to be the heartbeat and aim of all our advocacy. We advocate because we see the impact of broken relationships all around us - in things like conflict, when people are forced from their homes and when our environment is damaged. We advocate because we believe change is possible in those situations through justice, truth, mercy and peace. Jesus has enabled us to be reconciled to God and, through that, we are freed to pursue reconciliation with other people and with God's creation, in everyday and in life changing moments. We see churches across the world living that reconciliation in the most remarkable ways and we have the opportunity of sharing their experiences with others.'

Kiera Phyo, Director of the Reconciling Leaders Network, expressed hope that the webinar 'will inspire people about the potential and possibility of being peacemakers in pursuit of a just and flourishing world.' She also said: 'In a world which is fractured and fragile, we need hope to cross divides, navigate disagreements and seek peace in new and reimagined ways, as we see in the life of Jesus. At the Reconciling Leaders Network we work to equip people to practically live this out in their everyday relationships and encounters, teaching three habits rooted in scripture: "Be Curious, Be Present and Reimagine". This webinar is an opportunity to discover that there is power in our interconnection, and together, we are more than the sum of our parts.'
