Francophone Anglican bishops and their spouses are meeting in Nairobi this week (3–10 September) for a gathering focused on mission, leadership, and community transformation. The event has brought together participants from a number of francophone dioceses.

In many parts of the Anglican Communion, bishops’ spouses are central to diocesan ministry, family life and community outreach.

One of those helping to lead the spouses’ sessions is Estele Dibo Elango from the Anglican Diocese of Cameroon. In the lead up to the gathering, she reflected on why it is so important that spouses are included.

‘The participation of spouses in the Anglican Francophone Bishops’ Conference is highly significant,’ she explained. ‘This conference provides a platform for emotional and practical support, helping us to navigate the challenges of church leadership and to foster resilience. Many of us are deeply involved in ministry. Recognising this shared calling strengthens bonds within families and enriches the wider church community.’

Estele emphasised the sense of collaboration that grows when spouses from across different regions are able to meet.

‘Being involved promotes unity and collaboration among Episcopal families,’ she said. ‘It leads to stronger relationships and new opportunities for networking across the Francophone Anglican world.’

The programme for spouses is designed not only to encourage support and collaboration, but also to foster personal growth and confidence. Estele described how important it is for spouses to recognise their God-given purpose.

‘We are not called to live as shadows under the purple cassocks of our husbands,’ she said. ‘Living our uniqueness is our strength and fulfilment. With confidence and clarity, we can serve alongside our spouses while also living fully into the purpose God has given each of us.’

Another theme Estele highlighted is the importance of safety and well-being in family life as well as in church communities.

‘Creating a safe church must go hand-in-hand with creating safe homes,’ she said. ‘If our families are not places of safety, we cannot expect to foster a safe church. As spouses, we have a vital role to play in ensuring our homes are secure and nurturing, so that together we can build up the Church.’

Her reflections offer a reminder that the Francophone gathering is not just about bishops learning from one another, but about whole families being strengthened in their shared ministry.

As the week continues in Nairobi, participants will share experiences, explore fresh approaches to mission, and deepen bonds of fellowship. For Estele and the other spouses, this is also a chance to affirm their unique contribution to the life of the Anglican Communion — and to return home with renewed confidence, encouragement and hope.

The gathering is organised by the Francophone Network of the Anglican Communion, together with the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa (CAPA) and the Episcopal Ministry (EMAC) team at the Anglican Communion Office. Representatives from Tearfund are also contributing, bringing their expertise in community development.

The gathering is structured around retreat, Bible study, prayer and fellowship, alongside sessions on leadership, capacity development, and resource sharing. Participants are also hearing from the Anglican Communion’s Safe Church and Science Commissions, as well as exploring how churches can respond to poverty through an ‘asset-based’ approach to community transformation.
