[Church in Wales] Historic churches in Wales can apply for a share of a multi-million pound fund for urgent roof repairs.

They just have until the end of January to apply for the £15m government fund announced this week in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.

The Church in Wales is urging congregations to apply before the money disappears. Two-thirds of its churches are listed buildings. Grants are available from £10,000 to £100,000 to help meet the costs of urgent repairs to roofs and gutters.

The fund is administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) on behalf of the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). Full details are available on its website at

Alex Glanville, the Church’s head of property services, said, “This fund could make a huge difference to churches struggling to keep the rain out and keep parishioners and visitors warm and comfortable A good roof can last a lifetime and can ensure the rest of the fabric of the building is protected.

“The offer is also open to Welsh cathedrals so I hope as many churches as possible will apply and that Wales gets its fair share of the fund.

“The work must be identified within a Quinquennial and will need to be completed within two years, though a faculty does not have to have been granted in order to apply.”
