[Anglican Diocese of Brisbane] The Chair of the Brisbane Anglican Diocesan Social Responsibilities Committee, The Very Reverend Dr Peter Catt, today spoke out strongly against immigration spokesman Scott Morrison's demands for ‘behaviour protocols’ for asylum seekers.
"This is pure fear-mongering," Dr Catt said.
"Asylum seekers are people seeking refuge, not criminals in hiding."
Dr Catt says that Mr Morrison's views create a false image of asylum seekers in the public mind.
"More and more of the political and community discourse around asylum seekers and refugees is dehumanising and unethical," Dr Catt said.
"It segregates asylum seekers into a category of beings who are not 'like us' - not deserving of compassion, support or even just simple fair mindedness."
"I sincerely hope that as the election campaign progresses, the public dialogue about asylum seeker and refugee issues will rise above cheap political point scoring."
