From the Church Times
AN IMAGE of Jesus as an All Black rugby player has gone on display in Wellington Cathedral to coincide with the Rugby World Cup tournament, which is currently taking place in New Zealand.
The image, New Zealand Icon, by Don Little, an artist in Wellington, was spotted by the Dean, the Very Revd Frank Nelson, at an art exhibition that the Cathedral hosted last year. He immediately thought that it would be good to show it there again.
“My own hope is that it will make us think a little about one of the central beliefs of Christianity, that God, in Christ, became human,” the Dean said.
“Rugby is often likened to the real religion of New Zealand; so I think there is something quite profound being said by Don Little in his slightly tongue-in-cheek painting.”
