Thursdays in Black

Thursdays in Black

What do Argentina, Bosnia, Israel, Palestine, Rwanda and South Africa have in common? Yes, you are right – these are the countries from which Living Letters originated and were shared to the World Council of Churches. Letters about brave women, passionate for justice and filled with hope for a transformed nation, letters of independent yet strikingly similar movements led by women that resulted in what is now known as the Thursdays in Black campaign.

Thursdays in Black was born out of a worldwide season of crisis and despair, when women dared to say NO to the defeating, demeaning and dehumanizing systems of oppression, violence and conflict to offer HOPE born of faith for transformed futures. They were advocates, they were, enablers, they were grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, widow-women, wives, singles, spinsters, suffragettes, labourers, politicians, students, unemployed, activists ...women – empowered by their faith that together we can build a world without rape or violence. Thursdays in Black brings to the fore stories of violence, of marginalization and injustice underscored by the metanarrative of resistance, resilience and solidarity in our homes, our workplaces, our schools ... our places of worship.

Join us this Thursday and every day as the movement gains momentum by wearing Black and sharing your story with others (directly or on social media) taking time to:

- Pause, remember and represent those who have been victimized

- Post a story or information about overcoming sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in honour of both victimized and survivors of SGBV

- Pledge to do your part in keeping hope alive

- Participate in (or lead) action, advocacy and awareness-raising to end rape and violence

- Pray for those still trapped in systems and cycles of abuse

Our Hope continues to grow. Our Faith that this scourge may end remains true - #ThursdaysinBlack is about me and You!
