Bishop Michael Ingham of New Westminster has apologized to gay and lesbian Anglicans for how slowly the church is moving on deciding how to minister to them. The apology came during a General Synod presentation on sexuality, particularly how to give pastoral care to gays and lesbians.

Bishop Gordon Beardy of Keewatin formally forgave the church for its past dealings with indigenous peoples at a native healing ceremony during the meeting of the General Synod. The forgiveness comes eight years after the Primate, Archbishop Michael Peers, apologized on behalf of the church for its part in the residential school system.

Toronto, Friday, May 18, 2001 - Led by the Primate, Archbishop Michael Peers, a senior five-person delegation representing the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Canada meeting Thursday, May 17 with the Hon Herb Gray, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, received assurances that the federal government is now in a position to "move from dialogue to formal discussions, leading to an agreement" in the ongoing matter involving 'residential schools' litigation.
