Non-government aid agencies working in Burundi are urging the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to exempt immediately relief supplies from its blockade of goods into the country. The embargo has been imposed in a bid to persuade warring parties in Burundi to stop fighting and start negotiations.

Anglican Bishop Killed in Air Crash

The Assistant Bishop of the Kirinyaga CPK Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Andrew Adano Tuye was killed in an air crash on Saturday 27th July 1996. He died with senior government officials when the police helicopter they were travelling in crashed just outside Marsabit town about 300 kms North of Nairobi.

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches [ZCC] has replaced its president, Anglican Bishop Jonathan Siyachitema, of Harare. Bishop Siyachitema has recently caused controversy in Zimbabwe by publicly criticising homosexuals, but this was not, a ZCC official said, the reason for his replacement.

Archbishop Tutu Receives Special Award

The Most Revd Desmond Tutu has been given a special award by the Archbishop of Canterbury - The Archbishop of Canterbury's Award for Outstanding Service to the Anglican Communion. Archbishop Tutu is the first recipient of this award which was presented to him personally by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Cape Town during a farewell service at the end of June.

West Africa: AID Agencies Cut Back Operations

Twelve international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), decided to cut back drastically their relief operations in Liberia until security and order are established, the LWF said in a press release. The decision was taken "reluctantly" by officials from the NGOs at a 28 May meeting in Geneva.

New Primate for the Anglican Church in Southern Africa

The Rt Revd Winston Njongonkulu Ndungane, the Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman, has been elected Archbishop of Cape Town and becomes the new Primate of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa. He succeeds the Most Revd Desmond Tutu who has retired from the post and now heads the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
