New Primate for the Province

The Electoral College for the election of the Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Tanzania this week elected the Rt Revd Donald Mtetemela to be the 4th Archbishop of the Church for a term of five years.

Bishop Donald Mtetemela was born in 1947. After gaining a Diploma in Theology at St Philip's Theological College, Kongwa, he was ordained priest in 1971, in the Diocese of Central Tanganyika. From 1975-1976 he studied at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, UK and gained a Diploma in Theology. In 1978 he was appointed Diocesan Secretary to the Diocese of Central Tanganyika. In 1982 he was appointed Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Central Tanganyika and in 1990 he became the first Bishop of the Diocese of Ruaha.

The Archbishop-elect is married with seven children. He will continue to serve as the Bishop of Ruaha.
