5th October 2001

Under the baton of Barry Smith and Mjikisile Vulindlu, the Cape Philharmonic, St George’s Singers, UCT Choir and UCT Choir for Africa are offering Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a celebratory concert for his 70th birthday.

The concert, which takes place at St George’s Cathedral on Wednesday 10th October at 8pm, includes many musical favourites of the Archbishop - Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, Mozart’s enchanting motet, Ave verum corpus and ebullient serenade, Eine kleine Nachtmusik, together with Bach’s Jesu, joy of man’s desiring and freedom songs sung by the UCT choirs. A Birthday Greeting, arranged and orchestrated by composer Grant McLachlan will bring the concert’s first half to a rousing conclusion before all those there will join the Arch and Ma Leah for interval refreshments, all donated by city hotels and drinks suppliers.

Sponsored by the City of Cape Town tickets for the concert are available from Computicket. The proceeds from the concert will go to supporting the cathedral's outreach ministry.
