Archbishop of Canterbury to preach

The Primates (Chief Provincial archbishops and presiding bishops) of the world-wide Anglican Communion, meeting this week in Oporto, will gather on Sunday, March 26, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Lusitanian (Catholic, Apostolic, Evangelical) Church of St John the Evangelist, Vila Nova de Gaia, for a liturgical procession followed by a celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

The procession of over 40 Anglican archbishops and bishops from around the world, in colourful robes, will move from the church of St. John the Evangelist, at Rua Afonso de Albuquerque, 86 to the Ginasio do Torne, Rua 14 de Outubro, 264, for the Eucharist.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd George L. Carey, President of the Anglican Communion, will preach the sermon during the liturgy with Bishop Fernando Soares as the principal celebrant. Other participants will be the Archbishops of Cape Town and Ireland, the Presiding Bishop of the United States and the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion. The bishop of the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church, the Rt Revd Carlos Lozano Lopez, will also be present as will the Rt Revd John Hind, Anglican Bishop in Europe.

Ecumenical guests from the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant churches are expected to attend. The Lusitanian Church is a part of the Anglican Communion of Churches.

The meeting continues through 28 March here in Oporto.
