The Rt Revd John Hind, Bishop in Europe, has been invited to take part in a special service at the Roman Catholic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The Bishop will preach for the first time in this historic building on 21st January at a 1662 choral evensong that will mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
The invitation to preach came from Cardinal Lustiger, Cardinal Archbishop of Paris, as part of a celebration of contacts with other Christian communities.
"This evensong is a sign of advancement in relations between our two Christian traditions," said the Archdeacon of France, Ven Martin Draper, who is co-ordinating arrangements for the service.
Opportunities for Anglican cathedral music to be sung in liturgical settings in Europe are rare. The music for this special occasion will be supplied by the combined choirs of the Anglican churches in Paris.
"I am obviously delighted to have been invited to preach in Notre Dame," said Bishop John Hind. "I am sure it will be a wonderful occasion and an excellent way to celebrate our unity as Christians."
