Further to calls by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Roman Catholic Church in Kenya for an extension to the 31st January deadline for the issue of new generation identity cards, the President of Kenya, Daniel arap Moi, has extended the deadline by a month. President Moi made the announcement on 30th January stating that he had made the extension after having considered the difficulties many Kenyans have had to get the new cards.

Concern had been expressed by the Churches about the short deadline for registration for the new-generation identity cards because the Government had previously stated that old generation identity cards will not be valid after January. As the cards are a requirement for voter registration for national elections, the Churches and other groups had asked for an extension.
