The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, speaks of his experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit as a 19-year-old new Christian.
In this video message, which was filmed for the centenary celebrations of the Elim Pentecostal family of churches, and shown during their 100th anniversary event in London on Saturday 31 October, Justin Welby says that he was “overwhelmed by the love of God” as he read John 3:16 two weeks after becoming a Christian.
“It was from that moment and in the days that followed I realised that the Holy Spirit of God had touched me in a very powerful way,” he says. “I began to speak in tongues and began to learn of the intimacy that Christ brings to us.
“At first, I thought ‘Gosh! That’s an amazing discovery’ – being 19 and not knowing much about anything – and then I realised that this is something God has been doing since the beginning of calling people to serve him: he filled them with his Holy Spirit.”
